Mental Health First Aid Course - First Aid Pro

Mental Health First Aid Course Overview

Our Mental Health First Aid Course delivers comprehensive mental health first aid training developed by Mental Health First Aid Australia. With 3.2 million Australians (1 in 5 people) experiencing a mental illness in any given year, raising awareness and educating people on how to recognise the signs and symptoms of mental health issues is more important than ever.

Mental health first aid training is a critical workplace and community skill that significantly improves outcomes during mental health emergencies. Our MHFA certification equips you with vital knowledge and practical skills to confidently approach people experiencing mental health difficulties, provide meaningful support, and connect them with professional help when needed.

In workplaces, mental health first aid helps build awareness and equips staff with the knowledge to act early. Early intervention can make a significant difference, protecting the wellbeing of employees and creating a safer, more supportive work environment. Understanding Mental Health First Aid Training

MHFA Mental Health First Aid Course

What is Mental Health First Aid?

Mental health first aid is the help provided to a person developing a mental health problem, experiencing a worsening of an existing mental health problem, or in a mental health crisis. The first aid is given until appropriate professional help is received or the crisis resolves.

Just like physical first aid, mental health first aid provides skills and systems to help you know what to do in a crisis and gives you the tools to identify early signs of mental illness.

Why is Mental Health First Aid Important?

Mental health first aid training is crucial because it empowers people to provide initial support to someone experiencing mental health difficulties or a mental health crisis. With approximately 1 in 5 Australians experiencing a mental health condition in any given year, the ability to recognise warning signs and respond appropriately can be life-saving.

Early intervention significantly improves outcomes, and having trained mental health first aiders in the community and workplace helps reduce stigma, encourages help-seeking behaviour, and creates supportive environments where people feel safe to discuss mental health challenges.

Why is Mental Health First Aid Important in the Workplace?

Mental health first aid is vital in the workplace because it creates a supportive environment where employees feel safe to discuss mental health concerns. The workplace can contribute to the development or worsening of depression and anxiety through factors such as organisational change, job strain, and traumatic events.

Having mental health first aiders in the workplace enables early identification of issues, reduces absenteeism and presenteeism, improves productivity, and demonstrates employer commitment to staff wellbeing. Workplaces with trained mental health first aiders report improved staff morale, reduced stigma, and better overall workplace culture.

What is ALGEE in Mental Health First Aid?

ALGEE is the mental health first aid action plan that guides your response when supporting someone experiencing a mental health challenge or crisis. Each letter represents a key step:

  • A – Approach, assess and assist with any crisis
  • L – Listen non-judgementally
  • G – Give support and information
  • E – Encourage appropriate professional help
  • E – Encourage other supports

This evidence-based framework ensures you provide effective, compassionate support while maintaining appropriate boundaries and encouraging professional intervention when needed.

We offer daily deals and group discounts, plus we’ll beat any competitor’s advertised price by 10%. The course fee includes all training materials, your Mental Health First Aid Manual, assessment, and your nationally recognised certificate – no hidden costs!
How long is mental health first aid training?
The Mental Health First Aid course is delivered over 12 hours across 2 days. This comprehensive face-to-face format allows for in-depth learning, interactive discussions, case studies, role-play scenarios, and practical skill development. The 2-day structure provides ample time to cover all essential mental health first aid topics while allowing for meaningful engagement and questions.
How long does mental health first aid certification last? Does mental health first aid expire?
Mental Health First Aid certification is valid for 36 months (3 years) from the date of issue. After 3 years, it’s recommended to complete a refresher course to maintain your skills and stay current with the latest approaches and evidence-based practices in mental health first aid. Maintaining current certification ensures you’re providing the most effective support possible.
Is mental health first aid an accredited course?

Our Mental Health First Aid course is not considered a nationally accredited course, however, it is endorsed and developed by Mental Health First Aid Australia (part of Mental Health First Aid International). MHFA uses evidence-based and scientifically proven research methods to help evaluate and distribute knowledge and best practice for mental health first aid. All course facilitators undergo rigorous training with Mental Health First Aid Australia and must be certified to deliver the program.

Is mental health first aid evidence based?
Yes, Mental Health First Aid training is evidence-based and scientifically proven. The program uses research-backed methods developed by mental health professionals and people with lived experience of mental illness. Studies have demonstrated that MHFA training improves participants’ mental health literacy, reduces stigma, increases confidence in providing support, and leads to more helpful support being provided to people experiencing mental health challenges.
What is a mental health first aid certificate?
A mental health first aid certificate is your official recognition that you have completed accredited Mental Health First Aid training. This nationally recognised certificate, endorsed by Mental Health First Aid Australia, demonstrates that you have the knowledge and skills to recognise signs of mental health problems, provide initial support to someone experiencing mental health difficulties or a crisis, and guide them toward appropriate professional help. The certificate is valid for three years and is recognised across Australian workplaces and communities.
How to get mental health first aid certified?

To become mental health first aid certified, you need to complete an accredited Mental Health First Aid course with a certified training provider like First Aid Pro. The process is simple: enrol in one of our 2-day MHFA courses, attend both days of face-to-face training, actively participate in discussions and activities, and successfully complete the course. Upon completion, you’ll receive your Mental Health First Aid certificate of attendance. You can then optionally pursue Mental Health First Aider Accreditation through Mental Health First Aid Australia’s online assessment.

What do you learn in a mental health first aid training program?
Mental health first aid training covers how to recognise signs and symptoms of common mental health conditions including anxiety, depression, psychosis, and substance use problems. You’ll learn the ALGEE Action Plan for providing support, how to respond to mental health crises such as suicidal thoughts, panic attacks, and traumatic events, effective communication and listening skills, how to reduce stigma, and how to connect people with professional help and treatment options. The course also covers self-care for mental health first aiders and provides a comprehensive Mental Health First Aid Manual for ongoing reference.
What is first aid for mental health? What should I do if someone shows signs of a mental health crisis?

First aid for mental health is the initial help provided to someone developing a mental health problem, experiencing a worsening of an existing condition, or in a mental health crisis. If someone shows signs of a mental health crisis, follow the ALGEE Action Plan: Approach, assess and assist with any crisis; Listen non-judgementally; Give support and information; Encourage appropriate professional help; and Encourage other supports. Stay calm, ensure safety, listen without judgement, and help connect them with professional support such as emergency services (000), a GP, or crisis helplines like Lifeline (13 11 14).

What is youth mental health first aid?
Youth Mental Health First Aid is a specialised version of the standard MHFA course that focuses specifically on adolescents and young people. This course is designed for adults who work with, live with, or support young people aged 12-18. It covers mental health challenges commonly experienced during adolescence and teaches age-appropriate strategies for providing support. While we primarily offer the standard Mental Health First Aid course, the skills and knowledge gained are applicable across age groups.
Is mental health first aid worth it?
Yes, mental health first aid training is highly worthwhile. With 1 in 5 Australians experiencing a mental health condition in any given year, having the skills to recognise and respond to mental health challenges can be life-saving. MHFA training increases your confidence in supporting others, reduces stigma, improves mental health literacy, and creates more supportive communities and workplaces. Many participants report that the training has helped them support friends, family members, or colleagues experiencing mental health difficulties, with some crediting the training with helping save lives.
How effective is mental health first aid training in supporting colleagues or friends?
Mental health first aid training is proven to be highly effective. Research shows that participants who complete MHFA training demonstrate improved knowledge of mental health conditions, increased confidence in providing support, reduced stigma, and are more likely to encourage others to seek professional help. Studies have found that mental health first aiders provide more helpful support to people experiencing mental health challenges compared to those without training. In workplace settings, MHFA training has been associated with improved workplace culture, reduced absenteeism, and better early identification of mental health concerns.
How can mental health first aid be effectively integrated into community programs?
Mental health first aid can be integrated into community programs by training community leaders, volunteers, and members who regularly interact with others. This creates a network of support throughout the community. Effective integration involves identifying key community touchpoints (sports clubs, volunteer organisations, faith groups, neighbourhood centres), training champions who can advocate for mental health awareness, ensuring diverse representation in trained first aiders, connecting with local mental health services for referral pathways, and creating ongoing opportunities for skill reinforcement and updates. Community programs can also promote the availability of mental health first aiders to reduce stigma and normalise help-seeking.
Where can I find certified mental health first aid courses near me?
First Aid Pro offers mental health first aid courses at over 170 locations across Australia, including all capital cities and many regional centres. Our courses run 7 days a week with flexible scheduling options. You can find upcoming mental health first aid courses near you by visiting our course calendar on the First Aid Pro website, calling us on 08 7120 2570, or enquiring online. We also offer onsite workplace training if you prefer us to come to your location.
What qualifications do I need to become a mental health first aider?
No prior qualifications are needed to become a mental health first aider. Anyone with basic literacy and numeracy skills can enrol in our Mental Health First Aid course. The course is designed for everyday people who want to support others experiencing mental health challenges – you don’t need medical, psychology, or healthcare backgrounds. You simply need to be at least 14 years old (under 18s require parental consent), attend both days of training, and actively participate in the course.
How to become a mental health first aid trainer?
To become a mental health first aid instructor (officially called an MHFA Accredited Instructor), you must complete specialised training through Mental Health First Aid Australia. This involves completing the standard Mental Health First Aid course, meeting specific eligibility criteria (including experience in training, education, or mental health), completing the MHFA Instructor Training course, and maintaining your accreditation through ongoing professional development. Regarding income, MHFA instructors’ earnings vary widely depending on whether they work as employed trainers for organisations like First Aid Pro, operate as independent trainers, or incorporate MHFA training into broader roles such as workplace trainers or mental health professionals. For information about instructor training, contact Mental Health First Aid Australia directly.
Can I claim a mental health first aid course on tax?

You can generally claim a tax deduction for mental health first aid training if it relates to your current employment, your employer requires the qualification, it helps you earn your income, and you paid for it yourself (not reimbursed). Keep your receipt and consult your tax professional for specific advice regarding your circumstances.
