What Does a First Aid Trainer Do?

A first aid trainer is responsible for imparting vital emergency first aid skills to both teenagers and adults. These professionals are tasked with educating individuals on how to perform CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) and provide immediate care to those who are injured or suddenly fall ill.

Their training role includes instructing participants on how to effectively summon emergency medical help and how to offer necessary support to the injured or ill person until professional help arrives.

These instructors are also responsible for evaluating the proficiency of their trainees in administering CPR and initial response care. Upon successful assessment, they issue certifications to the trainees.

First aid trainers typically conduct their sessions in small group settings, employing a combination of verbal instruction and physical demonstration of first aid techniques and life-saving procedures.

Why consider becoming a first aid trainer?

Embarking on a career in first aid training offers a wealth of opportunities in both public and private sectors, presenting a field that is consistently in demand. The enduring relevance of first aid skills ensures that the need for qualified first aid trainers remains strong and steady.

Choosing a career in First Aid Training is exceptionally fulfilling. It gives you the chance to impart crucial life-saving skills to numerous students. You become a conduit for essential knowledge, equipping individuals with the ability to provide first aid in emergencies.

The skill of first aid is not just a professional asset but a vital life skill, and the act of passing this knowledge on makes for a highly commendable and satisfying career path.

How to Become a First Aid Trainer

Whether you’re seeking employment with a registered training organisation, or aiming to become an independent instructor, you will find the following steps helpful:

Step 1. Get the relevant qualifications

Current Certificate IV in Training and Assessment TAE40116 (and transcript)

To become a first aid instructor, candidates typically need at least a basic teaching qualification. As per the Standards for Registered Training Organisations 2015, effective from 31st March 2019, first aid trainers and assessors are required to have a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment or a recognized equivalent.

Alternatively, possessing a teaching qualification acknowledged by the Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA) also qualifies one to teach first aid.

Earning a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment or a similar credential is crucial for developing the skills needed to teach and assess vocational abilities. This certificate can generally be completed within six months through full-time study.

Step 2. Gain experience

First Aid Certification

Once you’ve secured teaching qualifications demonstrating your capability as a trainer, it’s important to align these qualifications with pertinent experience. Holding additional vocational qualifications can make you eligible to train once you gain the appropriate first aid qualifications such as:

  • Basic Life Support Training (BLS)
  • Provide CPR
  • Provide First Aid
  • Emergency Response in an Education Care Setting

You may find that some first aid training organisations opt to equip you with the necessary emergency response skills through on-the-job training. However, if you’re considering a career as an independent first aid instructor and assessor, it’s usually expected that you obtain your first aid certification independently.

The Provide First Aid Level 2 certification, formerly referred to as Senior First Aid, is often the preferred option for aspiring first aid trainers. This extensive course is nationally accredited and equips the student with both the practical skills and theoretical understanding necessary for delivering proficient emergency first responder care.

Step 3. Apply for a job

After fulfilling the educational requirements for conducting first aid courses, you’re ready to either apply for a position as an instructor or start promoting your services as an independent trainer.

Before embarking on job applications or reaching out to potential clients, it’s wise to update your resume or first aid instructor profile. In doing so, make sure to highlight all your pertinent qualifications, along with any skills or characteristics that could contribute to your effectiveness as a trainer.
